Home / Beauty and the Beach: Great New Choices in Plus-Size Swimwear
600x74 Bridal Guide

Finding flattering swimwear that makes you feel comfortable, beautiful, and yes, sexy, can be a challenge for every woman, but it seems to be an even bigger one for many plus-sized lovelies.

The problem isn’t just that plus-size options are far fewer than those available for other sizes, but also that a lot of retailers don’t seem to deliver when it comes to fashionable and flattering styles for curvier women.

We’ve rounded up some brands that offer some truly stylish plus-size swimwear options, including great vintage-inspired style that are not only totally on-trend but also completely flattering.

If you want vintage-style swimwear that will not only encase your God-given curves but that would have made Rosie the Riveter weep with sartorial joy, then look no further than Kiyonna’s recently launched line of swimwear. Founded by Kim Camarella-Khanbeigi, the plus-size clothing company is all about “selling a feeling not a product” and the “idea that curvy women deserved to look and feel stylish and amazing.” Sounds like a simple recipe for success, doesn’t it?

We love Kiyonna’s Ava Convertible Swimsuit (top photo, $128), which has forgiving power-mesh lining and ruching, as well as straps that can be tied and adjusted in a multitude of different ways. The Farrah (above) is also inspired by 50s pin-up girls and offers a flattering plunge neckline and more coverage in the leg area — perfect when worn with one of Kiyonna’s pretty coverups and some large, glam sunglasses. Kiyonna is available to buy online and in over 100 retail stores, including their flagship shop Upstairs Boutique in Anaheim.

Monif C
Designed by mother-daughter team Monif and Elaine Clarke, Monif C. is all about championing high-fashion looks for plus-size women. Moreover, the brand is about appreciating a woman’s natural sex appeal and not trying to stifle it. And while Monif C. swimwear is cleverly constructed (great coverage and support, forgiving ruching and high waists) it isn’t meant to hide the wearer’s curves. Rather, the company’s belief is that larger woman should celebrate their size, not try to hide it.

Monif C. offers plenty of flattering plus-size options including sexy plus-size bikinis, like the Capri High-Waisted Bikini (right, $160), and fashionable one-piece options (from a Bond-inspired gold number to the flirty, ruffled one-shouldered Espana, left) that will ensure you absolutely sizzle on the sand this summer. If you’re smaller on top but want the illusion of, well, more. then we’d recommend trying the Monif C.’s cowl-necked suit.

The reviews are in and Esther Williams Beach Blanket Bingo One Piece ($89.99) sold at ModCloth is a hit with plus-sized women of varying body types and shapes. The combination of the halter neckline, ruching and a high-waisted bottom will ensure you’re looking pretty in polka dots this summer. ModCloth also offers a wide array of other plus-size options from plaid one-pieces to monochromatic tankinis.

Old Navy
This one-shouldered metallic number looks more at home in a Beyonce video than it does in an Old Navy store, and will ensure all eyes are on you around the pool. The Old Navy plus-size suits come in various fabrics and coverage options, but this glam option is certainly our favorite. Old Navy Plus Metallic One-Shoulder Swimsuit, $54.94.

UK retailer Evans offers a wide selection of pretty plus-size suits, but the most effective when it comes to slimming and toning in no time at all is the Miraclesuit (£130.00). Promising to make you “10 pounds lighter in 10 seconds” this suit is constructed to hide all your little sins. Made of nylon and elastane the suit features subtle ruching, great coverage and a plunging neckline that will ensure your best assets are on display.

The website has a decent selection of pretty plus size choices including some great animal print options. We like the ASOS Curve Graphic Zebra Tankini (£8), not only for its flattering and comfortable cut, but also for its stylish monochromatic colors and print.

Another plus-size clothing label that has ventured into swimwear, Torrid offers some really adorable options for the curvier among us. The company also has some great cover-up options from tunics and skirts to dresses and shorts. The Black Foil Paisley One-Piece ($68) has thick straps for great support and ties at the bottom to allow you to adjust the length of the suit. Even better are the pretty additional details like the keyring cut-out and metallic paisley print.

If you’re a plus-size lady we encourage you to get out there and find the perfect suit for you this summer. Not only are there more styles, colors and cuts available than ever before, but you wouldn’t want to waste your summer under fluorescent lights struggling with your bathing suit options when you could be basking in the sun instead.
