La Luna: Yes Master’s Touching Tribute To A Fallen Idol
Posted by LT Staff | November 17, 2010

More than 30 years after her death, legendary cover girl Donyale Luna is back in the spotlight — as the unlikely inspiration for a stunning new lingerie collection that celebrates the spirit of the trailblazing African American model.

A new generation of fashionistas might have forgotten about Donyale, but not Igor Pacemski, founder and designer of the iconoclastic British lingerie label Yes Master. Igor has adopted Donyale as his style muse and turned his entire fall/winter collection into a sexy, stylish and very touching tribute that recalls the free-spirited 1960s.

Donyale (right) was one of the original supermodels of the pre-psychedelic ’60s — in fact, Time magazine called 1966 “The Luna Year.” She was the first black model to land a Vogue cover, a Warhol girl, an Avedon muse, a Playboy centerfold, a modern Salomé. The fact that she died at age 33 from a drug overdose only added a tragic dimension to Donyale’s improbable story, re-casting her as another victim of her hedonistic times.

Now, Yes Master — which last year offered lingerie pieces inspired by indie-rocker Pearl Lowe — has put together a collection that manages to be both on-trend and somehow still capture Donyale’s essence. All those feathers, fringes and peacock greens certainly add up!

Pacemski takes style cues from Donyale’s entire life cycle — from the suburbs of Detroit to the catwalks of New York, London and Milan — and her personal evolution from shy girl to free spirit. The designs within the collection reveal 60s and 70s style influences while maintaining an emphasis on silhouette and proportion.

The entire collection is called Dark Side of the Moon and it includes five groupings, from a very fashion-forward shapewear line to edgy rock-chick outfits to the glamorous Luna Wave line.

The most dramatic look, hands down, is the Raven bra and suspender (above) inspired by Donyale’s Playboy shoot in the late 1960s. The emerald green ensemble with black feather detail gives a new and literal meaning to ‘shaking your tail feather’. It will also be the talk of the season in boutiques everywhere Yes Master is sold this year.

Other highlights:

The Donyale Luna line of “extreme shaping” pieces, an otherwise demure range at first glance, consists of nude styles with contrasting linear black seams. Choose from a structured slip with power net lining, high-waist knickers with hip padding that give an extreme shape or elongating bras with extreme push-up.

The edgy Rock Luna and Luna Eclipse ranges, featuring the La Luna bra named after the model herself. Channel Donyale’s rock-n-roll edge with black tulle separates complete with blue crystal studs and thunderbolt appliqué . The showstopper in this collection is a fashion-forward black tulle bodysuit with silk jersey hood.

And finally, the cure to those blah-inducing blues is the most extensive and popular style range, Luna Wave, inspired by the tidal nature of Donyale’s spirit. Using a combination of sensual velvet and luxurious pleated habotai silk results in the creation of elaborate garments that beg to be seen!

All bras ranges in size from 32-36 A-F, with briefs and loungewear available in XS-XL, and prices from $80 for a bra and $200 for a loungewear item.
