Sigh. Sadly, I had to reluctantly rejoin civilization this past week after spending a relaxing and quiet week at the cottage (or as I like to call it, glamping) filled with good wine, great weather and breathtaking scenery . Now, rather than be lulled to sleep by a symphony of bullfrogs, I sleep to the sound of frantic downtown traffic.
If you truly want a vacation that’s utterly blissful, isolate yourself in a cozy cottage for a week — and by cottage, I mean a rustic and charming abode that’s as far removed from the luxuries your house provides.
What better place to immerse yourself in nature than the lush Adirondacks region of upstate New York? Nestled within the sprawling mountains and forests are more than 3, 000 lakes! Activities abound such as kayaking, canoeing and hiking for the nature nuts in your vacation group, or, for your more sedentary companions, docks provide the perfect spot to sunbathe or to relax with a book in the aptly named Adirondack chair.
You’re also obviously going to do a ton of swimming (unless of course you had daily visits from an acient snapping turtle like we did) so you’ll need multiple swimsuits.
I know you’re thinking ‘who cares what I bring because no one will even see me?’, which is true to some extent — I definitely overpacked and probably wore the same thing everyday, BUT we did have visitors so I packed a rotation of cute and stylish suits to appear, well, presentable.
Depending on what you’re planning to do — hiking or water-skiing vs. observing such activities — I’ve compiled swimsuits that appeal to both tastes.
If sunbathing on the dock is your idea of the perfect vacation, I’ve compiled vintage-esque floral printed swimsuits that exude the shabby-chic qualities of summer houses. Undrest’s liberty print bikini features a white ruffle trim that recalls a housewife’s apron circa 1960 in the hit show Mad Men. Just as retro is American Apparel’s floral patterned high-waisted swim brief, in a fabric that recalls vintage wallpaper, while J. Crew’s Apple Blossom bikini would look incredibly chic with a wide headband à la Brigitte Bardot.
Leave it to iconic designer Marc Jacobs to create two swimsuits that I’m sure every fashion-obsessed female is going to covet, not to mention the retro fabrics tie-in perfectly with our shabby-chic cottage theme. One is a gorgeous floral print halter-style one-piece with balconet top and removable sash, while the other is a more playful two-piece with knot-tie closures.
Now for all your nature nuts that love the adrenaline of water-skiing or the scenic journey of a hike, the following athletic swimsuits will have you sweating and swimming in style. Stella McCartney for Adidas combines functionality and style, like the blue perforated one-piece with zip-front detail that is an ideal option for morning swims across the lake. Also from McCartney for Adidas is her abstract Zebra and floral print two-piece, with a sports-like bra top and full-coverage brief that can go seamlessly from swimming to hiking when paired with a short.
TYR’s Durafast Ringback Workout bikini in navy is also well suited to more rigourous activites like kayaking or long treks through the woods. And never to exclude our busty counterparts, Panache’s Geneva Tankini with boyshort in coral provides ample coverage and fashionable flair.
So if you’re dying to escape to a locale where you set the pace, whether you prefer an active itinerary or a more relaxed one (or both!), a vacation in one of the many villages in the Adirondacks region is suited to you! Simply rent a cottage, add great friends and family (with lots of tasty food and wine of course) and immerse yourself in nature for a truly zen-like and memorable week!
