Heart-themed lingerie is not for everyone and not for every occasion. On Valentine’s Day, however, cupid lovers get a free pass when it comes to indulging in this most ubiquitous graphic cliché.
Most heart-print fashion tends to be either juvenile or trashy and it’s often found in racy erotic costumes. Some lingerie and fashion brands, though, use Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to find cute and creative new ways to recycle heart imagery.
If you’re looking for a gift item that unambiguously screams romance, here’s a selection of some of the nicer (and most provocative) heart-themed pieces in the market today.
Be Mine Bra, For Love and Lemons
The California lifestyle clothing line knows its market well, and the Be Mine bralette and matching thong will probably show up on sunny streets, beaches and clubs all year long. It uses an appliqué heart on a nude mesh shell. ($97).
Heart Throb Bra, Private Arts
Another L.A. brand that specializes in swimwear and lingerie for young romantics with a taste for loud, glamorous fashion, Private Arts recently released a Valentines collection called Wild Love. Its Heart Throb satin print bralette is described as a “lounge” bra, which probably means it’s best worn while watching, not playing, beach volleyball. ($50).
True Love Boxers, P.J. Salvage
These flirty cotton jersey shorts from the leading pyjama brand are a perfect way to spend Valentine’s Day at home, preferably curled up with a loved one. And yes, you can find the same print in a PJ set, natch. ($35).
One of the highlights of the Valentine season this year has been the inspired collab between leather-harness goddess Zana Bayne and heart aficionado Marc Jacobs. They came up with a must-have capsule collection of heart-shaped, BDSM-friendly accessories such as pierced pasties (shown in top photo), collars and cuffs (and heart-shaped glasses inspired by Lolita!). Naughty, naughty children.
I Heart U Tights, Erica M
This piece from the creative hand of NYC designer Erica M was a hit when it debuted last fall. But it’s not the semi-sheer pattern that’s the draw here, it’s the clever way it lets the color of your undies show through to create the heart symbol. On V-Day, wear them over pink, duh. ($42).
Esthar range, L’Agent by Agent Provocateur
L’Agent‘s Spring-Summer 2015 collection includes its first graphic novelty print, using the heart symbol on bras, masks, garters and the brand’s sexy briefs. Everything in the Esthar range is available in black, red or white and it’s clear that the strategists behind this super-hot brand are thinking beyond V-Day and have their eye on the bridal market too. After all, most brides were someone’s Valentine first, right?
Love Child Bodysuit, Only Hearts
The popular New York lingerie institution is a good place to start for all your heart-themed lingerie needs, and its Love Child suit with the cheeky cutout is one of the company’s signature looks. Best thing about it is that it’s made from plush velvet, perfect for fondling. ($88).
