Here’s a refreshing change of pace: a Valentine’s Day lingerie collection that avoids all the usual clichés of the occasion. No hearts, no flowers, no ribbons or bows and precious little pink.

Instead, boho retailer Free People goes for an eclectic mix of very non-traditional looks that are well-suited to its customer base of personal style rebels and freethinkers.

But that doesn’t meant the ‘My Secret Valentine’ collection from FP’s Intimately Free People label won’t induce a few swoons. It’s still a very romantic range that uses a wide mix of colors — from rich scarlet to sky blue — and embroidered fabrics to create lush visual and tactile impressions.

Nothing But Net bralette

Tie-dye, plum and smoke might not be the typical color palette for a Valentine’s Day fashion range but Free People, as it so often does, forces you to rethink those preconceptions. In fact, every piece in this big collection could be worn on any day in any season — and, come to think of it, isn’t that the kind of year-round romance most of us long for?

There are a lot of unique pieces in My Secret Valentine to tempt your heart and test your credit card. Sheer, gauzy rompers and bodies, street-worthy shorties, and a variety of bralettes, camis and slips suitable for layering in multiple ways.

The biggest treats, though, are an assortment of dazzling lingerie dresses and maxis that look like contenders for a Coachella catwalk. The best of the lot is the limited-edition Alissa’s Valentine’s Dress (main photo above) — with its plunging neckline, bustline cutout, broad fringed hem and shimmering beaded accents, this peach silk beauty will turn heads all year long. (It’s also an investment at $870 each.)
