Just a few months after testing the underwear market with a holiday collection called ‘Skivvies’, the California lifestyle brand For Love & Lemons is back with a full range aimed at free-thinking fashionistas.
The 2014 Skivvies collection is a big one, with a wide range of idiosyncratic pieces that showcase FL&L‘s love of texture and erotic trickery. And, with style names like Little Lolita, Honey Buns, Baby Cakes, Extra Virgin and Ain’t No Wifey, it’s easy to see who the target market is here: barely legal sex kittens on the prowl.
For Love & Lemons is a hit hipster fashion label out of L.A. via Wyoming (go figure), but founders Gillian Mahin and Laura Hall actually picked up their fondness for rebel style during a gap year in Australia. The duo’s label gained serious traction thanks to a steady flow of adorable and original mini-dresses and skirts that had a kind of one-off DIY appeal.
The same thing happened when FL&L debuted its Skivvies line last fall: one particular style flew off the shelves and put Skivvies on the map for good. That piece was the Bat Your Lashes underwire bra (above), which uses lace netting and eyelash lace over a nude tulle base to create the impression of a see-through macramé holdover from the 60s. The BYL line got picked up by Free People, which shares some of FL&L‘s aesthetic sense, and the rest is history.
For Spring 2014, Hall and Mahin appear to have plunged into lingerie with a real sense of purpose. There’s a ton of texture in this very hands-on collection: embroidered Chantilly lace, tulle appliqué, stretchy lace and mesh blends and a memorable wide-rib knit trimmed with scalloped lace in the Little Lolita range.
The signature look, though, is likely going to be the ribbon-like appliqué that shows up in the Dream Girl bralette (main photo above) and the Obsession range (above) that includes a bodysuit, halter bra and high-waist panty. We saw a couture version of this difficult pattern in one of Gaultier’s 2012 collections for La Perla; now FL&L offers a similarly dramatic look to the Coachella crowd.
For Love & Lemons also delivers on one of the must-have components of all West Coast lifestyle brands — an awesome lookbook that lets you see how impossibly cool and sexy you’re going to be once you get on this bandwagon. Here are some shots from the Spring 2104 Skivvies book; keep an eye on their webshop for pieces to become available, and for news about retail stockists.
