Aloe Lingerie Steps Out
Posted by richard | October 25, 2011

A growing number of established clothing labels have started including lingerie in their seasonal collections and, despite the added competition, it’s a good sign for indie lingerie market too. Fashion lingerie — carefully crafted and offering unique and recognizable designer looks — is busting out all over, and RTW labels are starting to play catch-up.

So it’s nice to see that trend move in the other direction, too — when a respected independent lingerie brand expands into the clothing market with womenswear that captures some of the elegance of fine intimates.

That’s the case for Aloe Lingerie, purveyors of breathtakingly lovely and light-as-a-feather silk lingerie and loungewear since 2003.

The UK label headed by designer Claire Judge this fall introduced its first ready-to-wear collection of blouses, shirts and dresses that have the same understated elegance of the label’s coveted camis, nighties and other lingerie pieces. Here’s an example of what to expect:

You’ll find many of the same style signatures that have come to define Aloe: fabrics that drape beautifully, well-placed necklines, and a careful use of gathers and ruching that define many pieces. The drawstring waist is another Aloe signature: a very simple flourish that creates a wonderful silhouette.

The transition into RTW clothing fits this label extremely well. Many of Aloe’s slips and camisoles are so gorgeous that women have found ways to work them into layered looks for public viewing.

The photos below, offering selections from Aloe’s stunning fall lingerie set, show why the move into semi-dressy clothing works is such a natural move.

The collection, which includes more than 20 looks, features a lot of powdery neutral hues like oyster and sand as well as the dark floral print for a more dramatic look. And all expertly tailored, using fine semi-sheer silks and lace paneling to create a vintage aura. And although these are lingerie or nightwear pieces, you can imagine many possibilities for how else to use them in your wardrobe.

Aloe is a highly regarded high-end label with a long list of celebrity friends and fans, from Kate Moss to SJP to Florence Welch. Still, it’s not the priciest label on the market and we’ve often felt that Aloe is a more affordable alternative to the unparalleled viruosity of Carine Gilson.

Look for Aloe in better specialty shops both here and in the UK and online at Bella Bella boutique shortly, or GlamAm now. Whether you opt for Aloe’s intimates or new apparel selections, treasure them!
