This weekend, Old Navy has been running a holiday TV commercial that features the jingle “Old Navy ‘Tis of Thee …“, set to the tune of that patriotic classic “My Country, Tis of Thee.” Which begs the question: why is it a felony to burn the American flag but it’s okay to debase it with trashy retail pitches?
A better use of Old Glory to sell some summertime duds can be found at Planet Blue, the Malibu-based apparel line that produces swimwear and light layering pieces coveted by California girls everywhere.
PB’s new summer lookbook, called Party In The USA, gives the old red-white-and-blue a workout that would make Betsy Ross blush, but it certainly captures the essence of the 4th of July in this century. In some trailer parks, at least.
As Planet Blue says by way of introducing its summer line: “For us, summer is all about crocheted beach cruisers, eeny teeny bikinis, ice cold beer and shorts that look more like underwear.”
For us, it’s also a burned-out girl on a bike who shows up with a six-pack and sparklers just in time to watch the fireworks.
Here are some images from the Planet Blue set, followed by their campaign video.
