FIRST IN A SERIES

While classic black is always in for bathing suit season, every year brings its own hot looks. This year, several styles have emerged as the biggest trends for an attention-grabbing summer.

From snake skin patterns to candy-colored confections, geek-friendly graphics to hippie chic, there’s a lot to choose from this season. (That’s a dazzling strappy Mara Hoffman one-piece above.)

We’ve rounded up some great swimsuit choices for each trend to help you make your selection and settle in a for long, hot summer!

NEON — Stop them in their tracks in a brightly hued suit this summer. Whether yellow or orange, blue or pink, neon is a hot trend in clothing and accessories, and swimwear is no different. Try a bikini in a single color (we love ones with interesting detailing like laces or ruffles) or a suit in a multi-hued print: either way neon is an easy way to update your swimwear wardrobe. Even better? Neon will show off your summer tan (real or from a bottle) to perfection. Shimmi is one of many youth-centric labels that have fallen for the neon glow this year: Shimmi Nicole Lace-Up Bandeau Bikini, $195.

RETRO — This trend is a two-parter: on the one hand there is the ongoing obsession with all things feminine and vintage-inspired. We’re talking one-pieces with sweetheart necklines and skirts, as well as bikinis with balconettes. The second part is the ruching seen on many of these styles (and other swimsuits as well). Ruching’s subtle gathering of fabric is also a brilliant way to hide any of those iffy areas without sacrificing an ounce of style. And who better to lead the way than aqua-lunged screen goddess Esther Williams: Esther Williams Bathing Beauty One Piece, $89.99.

GEOMETRIC — Straight lines, shapes, swirls and ethnic-style prints like the Aztec pattern of this colorful Mara Hoffman bikini will be seen all over the beach this summer. A fresh alternative to more traditional patterns, these graphic prints will keep you looking cool even on the hottest day at the beach. Mara Hoffman Embroidered Balconette Bikini, $275.

ANIMAL PRINT — A little wild and a lot hot, there’s just something about animal print. If you’re looking for a suit to grab his attention then one in an animal pattern (think leopard or snake) is just the strong, steamy ticket. Absolutely everyone is doing animal print this year; here’s one we like: Topshop White Leopard Print One Piece, $60.

BELTED — Some belted suits are functional while others are purely for appearances (ie. lounging) only. Not only does a properly placed belt help to define the right areas of your body, but the accessory adds a little something to even the simplest suits. Michael Kors does this well: Michael Kors Wrap-Around Belted Maillot, $289.

IKAT — These boho chic fabrics are all the rage in home decor and have been working their way into clothing as well. Although ikats do come in darker, monochromatic patterns many are also bright, cheery and vibrant making them ideal for summer. That’s a piece from Vix above; here’s another one we like from Shoshanna: Soshanna Balinese Ikat Bikini, $75 and $79.
