While instinct may tell you that summer is a time for bare gams, the trend towards wearing legwear and hosiery, especially pairs that are interesting and designed, is only growing. Black or colored, made of lace or covered in whimsical designs, legwear by companies like Wolford and Falke continues to be all the rage.
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite looks to take you from spring straight into fall:
Since 1949 this Austrian company has been supplying the world with beautiful, comfortable and high-quality hosiery and shapewear. For Spring/Summer 2011 we can’t get enough of Wolford’s Hero bandage tights (left) — a perfect way to add a bit of minx to even the most staid outfit — and their toeless Artiste Lace-Up design (right).
Want to look a bit more demure? The Rebecca 20 Dernier dotted tulle tights come in a variety of colors from smoky black to perfect-for-spring nude. Wolford also has a great collection of lace and crocheted tights, as well as some very sexy lace-trimmed stay-ups.
We’re also coveting Wolford’s seamless socks (right), the perfect alternative to going barefoot in the steamy summer. Wolford legwear is available for purchase at high end stores like Neiman-Marcus and online at boutique sites like Net-a-Porter.com, NancyMeyer.com and at Wolford.com.
French firm Gerbe has been keeping women’s legs beautiful since 1904. Today they have a multitude of different styles that you can choose from including their Limited Edition designs and Sexy Chic and Sunlight lines.
We love the subtle femininity of Gerbe’s Collant Estampe legwear (top photo), which comes in four colors and features a vine design that stretches from ankle to waist. The Lacage design (above right) is a sexy trompe d’oeil lace-up style, while the fun Ecailles (left) comes in several bright and trendy colors (think fuchsia and bright blue), ideal if you want to indulge in some color blocking this spring.

Legwear from shapewear giant Spanx may be utilitarian, but it’s also pretty. In designs like Tuxedo Stripes (right) and Diamond Patterns these uber-control-tops offer graphic patterns that can compete with the best of them.
The Spanx line also has some great opaque options in a variety of different colors. Spanx legwear can be purchased online at sites such as NeimanMarcus.com.
Falke is another of those companies with a long history of producing quality legwear for women. For Spring/Summer 2011 the German hosiery manufacturer has dabbled in one of the season’s biggest trends: color. One of our favorites is the Melange Striped tights (left) in the teal-purple-chartreuse colorway. So up-to-the-minute chic.
Of course, Falke also has their share of graphic prints, modern fishnets, and optical illusions (like the Graphic Lines, Grand Net and Strap Optic designs) and we simply love their faux-tattoo styles like the toeless Aquarel Tatoo, so perfect for summer shoes. Available online at sites like Net-A-Porter.com and NeimanMarcus.com.
As seen on chic shows like Gossip Girl, and available for purchase at department stores like Nordstrom and online sites like Beso.com, DKNY legwear is totally on-trend. The company not only offers traditional opaque tights, but also fun printed and graphic versions like their Diamond (right) and Lace Net (left) designs.
From basic opaques to out-there designs Topshop has you covered where legwear is concerned. Designs range from psychedelic tie-dye and feminine seamed polka dots to pointelle and rose lace tights.
Jean Paul Gaultier
Care to shell out $125 for a pair of fishnets? Then you may want to consider Gaultier’s take on sexy legwear: tights featuring the Eiffel tower, no less. Available for purchase at NeimanMarcus.com.
Wondering exactly how to wear these far-out legwear designs? We’d say the more complicated the design the simpler your outfit should be. For example, Wolford’s Lace-Up Artiste looks best when paired with something like a classic LBD.
The mix of classic and trend, feminine and a little naughty is what will make your outfit. And while a dark pair of hose are a great foundation for this season’s uber popular brights and color blocking trend, the brave among us can also opt to add color to their legs as well. When and how you wear your hosiery is really up to you. Paired with dresses, skirts and shorts these legwear designs really are attention-getting outfit makers.
