Most people spend their birthday accepting gifts and good wishes and ticking off the names of their friends who remembered.
Not Nicole Gill. The young UK designer, who turns a mind-boggling 23 years old today, is marking the occasion with a truly incredible gift to lingerie aficianados — 23% off all purchases until the end of the day. (I know what you’re thinking: if this becomes an annual tradition for Nicole, it’s going to get expensive when she’s my age!)
Nicole is one of a growing number of precociously and prodigiously talented newcomers who learned her chops at DMU’s renowned fashion and contour design program. She graduated only in 2009 and launched her label a year ago, specializing in luxury intimates and steel-boned lace-up corsets that are adapted from Victorian corset patterns to give them a very authentic vintage look.
Her celebrated debut collection Welcome to the Tea Party — no, not the Sarah Palin version; think instead of a sexy British garden party — was released last April and showcased at London’s Alternative Fashion Week. How’s that for a kick-off?
Nicole is now back with her second collection, a gorgeous mélange of gold silk and black lace called A Parisian Romance, adapted from French fashions of the 1940s.
There are 18 separate looks in the collection, whose centrepieces are Nicole’s range of flattering corsets and girdles, which include some styles based on patterns dating back to the 1880s..
There are some real treats in the collection, which includes bras, briefs and nightwear pieces (and lots of satiny bows, which have become ubiquitous in lingerie design this year). Our favorites: the gold silk Isabelle briefs, with a fluted silhouette based on the look of vintage French knickers; the luxurious Marianne balconette bra (top photo) with gold cups and black lace overlay; and the supremely sexy Adeline gold silk slip with its black ribbon shoulder ties.
It’s worth noting that Nicole Gill is not the only UK lingerie label that’s smitten with Paris this spring. Myla has a new Parisienne collection in the stores now, and it’s fun to compare how two talented designers interpret vintage Parisian style!
This is a very accomplished newcomer whose label and design aesthetic is still in its infancy; we can’t wait to see how it evolves! If you want to take advantage of Nicole’s birthday discount, better act fast — and DON’T wait till she turns 24, hoping she offers the same deal!
