Comfy PJs: Yes, Cotton Can Be Sexy!
Posted by connie | January 4, 2011

What’s the nighttime equivalent of comfort food? Pajamas in soft fabrics like cotton and flannel.

After recently rounding up some great silk pajama options that were sure to rate on any Christmas wish list, we thought we’d do the same for ladies who prefer the familiar comfort of cotton and flannel rather than silk and lace.

While these cozy fabrics often get a bad rap — ie. flannel is too juvenile, cotton too downmarket — they’ve come a long way over the years. Now premiere designers are offering luxury versions of comfy PJs at varying price points. Here are a few can’t-miss options:

Elizabeth Cotton
Founder Elizabeth began her business because she “wanted pajamas to love” that were both comfortable and made of long-lasting, quality materials. The result is a line of Egyptian cotton pajama sets (we’re talking 200+ thread count) and robes, as well as flannel PJs, that have been featured in Vogue and In Style among other publications, as well as on Oprah’s annual O-List.

Elizabeth Cotton also offers a line of cotton nightshirts in iconic Liberty of London florals, which are all the rage at the moment. PJ sets start at $148 and can be purchased on the Elizabeth Cotton website in a variety of color options.

Created by Canadian-born, L.A.-based Renee Claire Bertrand, BedHead is a line that offers pajamas in comfortable fabrics, sophisticated cuts and fun patterns. BedHead carries cotton and flannel PJs for women, men and children, all made in the L.A. area, as well as a luxe product line of 100% fine cotton and Italian cotton sateen jacquard pajama sets ($218 USD) in various colors and designs. Choose from patterns like the Aqua Paisley or a black set with a Lavender Jacquard print.

Want more Liberty of London florals? BedHead has them too, as well as plus and maternity sizes. Buy your set in over 1,500 retail outlets like Neiman Marcus, the BedHead flagship West Hollywood boutique, or online at the BedHead website. Better still, 20% of the purchase price on three styles goes to the Esperanza Community Housing Corporation charity.

Heritage brands are huge right now (see: Liberty of London, Mulberry, Barbour, and, yes, Burberry). What could be better as a gift — or a gift to yourself — than a comfortable and luxurious pajama set in classic Burberry plaid? Not much. Buy a pair of pajamas from this British brand at fine retailers worldwide or online, including at the Burberry website. Pieces start at $125.

Slightly masculine in cut and style, Bodas’ striped cotton pajama sets are all about luxurious comfort. Choose pieces in various neutrals, like white and charcoal grey, for sleepwear that is sure to make you want to curl up in bliss. These chic PJs can be purchased at; $94 for the shirt, $74 for the pants. Whoever said cotton can’t be luxurious and sexy?

Munki Munki / P.J. Salvage
Even big girls need a PJ set that’s perfect for sleepovers, and these two trendy U.S. labels fit the bill.

Both Munki Munki and P.J. Salvage target the youth and college crowds, with an emphasis on fun prints and super-soft cotton fabrics.

Munki Munki’s dog-print flannel set (left) includes a drawstring waist and is available online for $88. P.J. Salvage’s signature piece, the Peace Out flannel set (right) runs $52.
