This is Fashion Week in Vancouver, when designers get a chance to remind us all that fashion in B.C. involves more than just Gore-tex and hiking boots.
In fact, as unlikely as it seems, Vancouver is home base to a hot young lingerie label specializing in sporty Brazilian styles. That’s right — Brazilian undies from Canada.
Vivvos lingerie, founded in January of 2009, bills itself as Brazilian-inspired, Canadian-infused “under(?)wear” — the question mark is there’s, and is meant to indicate that Vivvos pieces can be worn under or instead of clothes (“if you dare”), and even pool- and beach-side.
Vivvos was born when designer Kathy Pettigrew, while on vacation in Latin America, was inspired by the bright colours available in the stores and decided to bring them back to Canada. Sourcing Italian fabrics, Kathy has since created a line of barely-there underwear, camisoles and wraps for the northern set — though products are available in select retailers and online to anyone with a taste for sassy, vibrant styles.
Vivvos offers one model of bratop — perfect for your next Bikram yoga session — as well as a camisole, boyshort, thong and bandeau wrap in a variety of colorful, original prints. Bottoms are cut in a high-side “Brazilian” style, as seen in the left-hand photo below.
The appeal of Vivvos’ small collection lies not in its variety but in its performance. And the proof is in the pudding: local B.C. stores have a hard time keeping it in stock.
Vivvos under/outerwear boasts a few characteristics other brands can’t. For one, they claim the fabric doesn’t pile, pull, sag, is anti-static, and extremely light. Because of this, the items also dry very quickly, allowing you to wear them as a bathing suit should you prefer them to your other water-friendly options. Furthermore, their fabric also wicks sand and offers sun protection.
And how about this for savvy marketing? To give a sense of where their products fit in the crowded undergarment market, Vivvos uses Olympic beach volleyball player Leah Allinger as a kind of brand ambassador and sometime model.
Offering itself as a bold and sassy way to cover up, Vivvos is at the forefront of a revolution of multi-purpose and hassle-free underwear that can also serve as tops, bathing suits, or anything else you can think of.
