As surely as the glaciers are receding, we are witnessing the gradual blurring of all boundaries between the very private world of lingerie and that of public fashion. What was once inner and under is now outer and over and, in the wrong hands, over-the-top.
The latest evidence of this shift — and a hopeful sign at that — is this surprising and clever collection of RTW tops from Aubade, the French lingerie artistes.
Of course, Aubade doesn’t call this 8-piece line ready-to-wear; they call it “Prêt à Séduire”, meaning “ready to seduce” — a witty label that reminds the wearer that these daywear pieces have much in common with Aubade’s exquisite lingerie repertoire, and the same seductive purpose too.
Working with silk, cotton and super-soft wool blends, and adding fine lace details in almost every piece, Aubade has elevated the functional chemise into an alluring new hybrid that is best described as “lingerie tops”.
Watch for some clever sleight-of-hand in these pieces: the Emma range (top photo, and first row below) has a removable lace back — wear it as a daring backless evening top or, later on, as an erotic romper.
Our favorite, though, is the Daphne ensemble (second row below): the shirtfront, and its oversized man-tie, are completely removable, turning the piece into a wicked, deep-plunge attention-grabber.
Aubade’s Prêt à Séduire mini collection will hit the company’s stores and fine lingerie boutiques worldwide this fall, beginning with the Louise line (bottom row). Watch for it!
