Victoria’s Secret Goes For Baroque

Doutzen Kroes for VIctoria's Secret | August 2010

If you’re like me, you get a kick out of finding hidden treasures in the Victoria’s Secret catalog or buried deep within its endless website. You know, the kind of pieces that jump out at you because they don’t seem to belong — like they were lifted from the showroom window of a Milan couture shop, or maybe a Brazilian bordello!

Victoria’s Secret likes to try new things and push its own boundaries beyond the core collection of cutie-pie pieces and monochrome molded cups. For example, check out these fresh images of VS model Doutzen Kroes in a photoshoot featuring some new pieces destined for the VS showroom.

Ladies, this ain’t yo momma’s Victoria’s Secret!

VS has done corsets before (though just a small collection) and they have a fondness for flyaway babydolls, but with these pieces they have cranked up the baroque styling to new heights.

The black lace corset and pink-trimmed basque in the shots below draw heavily from European fashion design and consumer tastes, while the heavily ornamented black babydoll with silver trim is pure Italian luxe lingerie.

Even the slinky peach satin slip in the final image exudes a level of sophistication that we don’t normally expect to find in our periodic VS safaris.

In terms of design and fabrication, these are complex pieces with seriously sexy ambitions, and I hope it means we’ll see more boundary-pushing from Victoria’s Secret to come!
