Venice Beach California

THIRD IN A SERIES

Ever bicker with a partner or family member(s) as to where your next vacation should be? Well, if your ideal getaway involves more physical activity than your counterpart’s more laid-back idea of bliss, then Venice Beach may be just the destination that’ll please everyone.

Whether you’re breaking waves at the local surfing haunt, Venice Breakwater, playing beach volleyball or cycling along the scenic bike routes, there are endless activities to keep you sports-junkies entertained.

But if the physical exertion part is not really your thing (not gonna lie, I’m more of the sloth type) Venice Beach is home to a slew of creative and artistic personalities. Not only did Jean-Michel Basquiat reside in VB in the 80s, but the laid-back destination prides itself as the place where iconic rocker Jim Morrison formed The Doors.

You’re probably wondering what in the world you’re going to pack for such an eclectic and colouful vacation, but it really depends on what activities you’re planning to do. So, whether checking out some local galleries and outdoor concerts are more your vibe, or if you’re planning on catching some serious waves — or a combination of the two — I’ve compiled a list of must-have swimwear for this diverse destination.

Because we’re heading to Southern California, I just had to include surf-inspired swimsuits &8212 not only because it’s a major trend this season, but because Venice Beach is the embodiment of surfer culture. My first pick is the Green Room wetsuit from Cynthia Rowley’s collaboration with Roxy. Not only is it suitable for a novice or expert surfer, but the best part is that even if you fall, you’ll look pretty darn cool doing so.

Not braving the waves, but still want to look the part? You’ll look surfer-chic in an abstract-water print neoprene bandeau bikini from Emilio Pucci, as well as in Lisa Marie Fernandez’s icy-blue Jasmine two-piece. Another great option is the athletic black Rox-Two-O neoprene bikini from Roxy — its sleek silhouette will take you effortlessly from a dip in the ocean to a beach side set of volleyball.

Now my ideal vacation involves some relaxing, perusing of the local art galleries, oh, and definitely checking out many of the local gastronomic offerings (describing myself as a huge major foodie is a massive understatement). So, the more vibrantly patterned swimsuits I’ve selected evoke Venice Beach’s graffiti murals and the mystical-desert imagery of Jim Morrison’s poetry. If you’ve ever seen Oliver Stone’s film, The Doors, you know what I mean.

The mix of chevron and ikat prints in Mara Hoffman’s Classic Tie-Side bikini is a perfect fit for the artistic and expressive locale, while likewise, Hoffman’s dreamy Kaleidoscopic string two-piece recalls Morrison’s psychedelic rock. Also a sure bet when it comes to packing? Marc Jacob’s Diamond Stripe bikini and Milly’s Chevron separates will look beautiful set against California’s colorful landscape, while Roxy’s trippy tie-dye White Noise Tiki two-piece combines creativity and athleticism.

As different as your partners’ packing lists may be — straw fedoras, tie-dye scarfs and woven friendship bracelets — at least you’ll find some commonalities in Venice Beach’s diverse offerings.
