Spectators who attended Jean Paul Gaultier’s couture show in Paris yesterday were in for quite the visual treat. Burlesque performer and personal friend to Gaultier, Dita Von Teese, strutted down the runway and revealed a little preview of what the French haute couture designer has in store for the upcoming fall.
The fall/winter 2011 Gaultier collection was a reflection of 1940s screen sirens with models dangling cigarette holders between their fingers and donning exaggerated turbans and dramatic silhouettes. Comical renderings of the iconic Eiffel Tower adorned sheer hosiery while metallics, fur and seductive black designs created a sumptuous feast for the eyes.
But the pièce de résistance? When showstopper Teese tantalized the audience by slinking flirtatiously down the runway in a floor-length black dress, only to seductively perform a striptease until she revealed a nude mesh corset with exaggerated boning that outlined her body and emphasized her tiny waist. From the back, the skeletal boning resembled lumbar vertebrae and ribs while hip bone outlines framed her cheeky bottom.
Interestingly enough, however, there may be more than meets the eye to Dita’s enthralling strip performance. Although the burlesque performer and legendary designer are good friends, it seems that her reveal was a little more business-oriented.
The hands that infamously designed Madonna’s cone bra and Kylie Minogue’s corset dresses have partnered with La Perla to release a lingerie collection this November.
While it seems only natural that Gaultier would venture into lingerie, he had this to say of the much-anticipated collaboration:
“Lingerie is a part of my DNA and of my heritage. In my latest prêt-à-porter collection I revisisted the conical bras and corsets worn as outerwear. This collaboration was a natural and logical step, especially since La Perla is the pearl of the lingerie, with the best savoir faire.”
Nor could Alain Prost, CEO of La Perla, agree more:
“Cooperating with Jean Paul Gaultier filled us with satisfaction from the very start. A perfect synergy immediately came to the light between his vision and the values of luxury and elegance that have always been conerstones in La Perla’s history.”
Included within the capsule collection are a rumored 27 pieces, most of which are hand sewn! While the intricately beautiful styles are sure to make any girl weak-in-the-knees (like the nude bra inspired by Madonna’s infamous conical bra), they will sure cost you a pretty penny! Expected to sell over 10,000 units, the lingerie will range in price from $600-$1200. My advice? Start pinching pennies now.
