Daring, audacious, campy and downright hilarious.
Those are just a few ways to describe the forthcoming Heavy Metal Couture collection of rock-and-roll corsets and corset-frocks from Maya Hansen, the freakishly talented Spanish corset designer.
These images are from the catwalk show at this year’s Madrid Fashion Week, where Hansen introduced her autumn/winter 2010-11 offerings, and it’s a safe bet she won’t have much competition this year for the uber-rock-chick lingerie market.
The Heavy Metal Couture collection appears to be quite extensive, and designed to both shock and amuse. Each highly individual piece features images, emblems or logos from leading heavy rock icons such as Kiss, Metallica and Iron Maiden, although some are emblazoned with the kind of generic skulls-and-hellfire iconography associated with the genre.
But don’t mistake these corsets for Halloween costumes. Hansen produces some of the most original, stylized and sought-after boudoir collections in the world, and we expect the Heavy Metal collection will feature the same craftsmanship and attention to detail that Maya Hansen is known for.
Hansen herself (right) comes to this project with more than a little street cred in rock circles. She’s been the costume designer for a number of Spanish metal bands and has been a celebrated fixture of the European goth scene for many years. At the very least, this collection is an homage to her own roots and community.
And when you think about it, the Heavy Metal line isn’t as Wayne’s World kitschy as it first appears. There’s an almost logical connection between overly contrived corsetry and melodramatic anthem rock.
Let’s face it: these pieces won’t look out of place at your next AC/DC slamfest. Too bad your boyfriend is still going to show up in a ball cap and souvenir T-shirt from last year’s tour!
