Remember the days when, for lack of a swimsuit, you’d strip down to your undies and dive in — and no one cared?
This summer, it’s going to be hard to tell the underwear from the high-priced swimwear, as top designers have cleverly incorporated the look and details of fine lingerie into 2010 swimsuit fashions.
The lingerie look in swimwear is so advanced that many labels have created swimsuits which feature corset detailing, underwire cups and even lace fabrics. You can take these pieces from the boudoir to the beach — and back again — without raising an eyebrow in either place.
One of the most drool-worthy lingerie-inspired swimsuits is the Zahra style by Agent Provocateur — not surprising, considering AP is no novice when it comes to lingerie design. The one-piece swimsuit is designed in a corset style with a tie-front closure, satin fabric that enhances and supports, and a red satin frontal panel and collar-style cups that provide a stylish modern look. While the Zahra is by no means inexpensive ($790, to be exact) the corset-style suit is sure to give you va-va-voom curves.
Similar in style, but much easier on the wallet, is the red-hot Zimmermann Thorn swimsuit. The bandeau style features corset-like boning detail on the front, but it’s the lace-up back that is sure to garner all the attention!
Other one-piece options include a Bottega Veneta red halter-style with contrast stitching, and the Rosa Chá Corselette swimsuit in a slimming steel and black.
For a two-piece style, Norma Kamali offers a fun, retro lingerie-inspired suit in a nylon lycra foil fabric. The high-waisted bottom and underwire bustier top are a 1950s throwback, yet the high gloss, almost faux leather appearance keeps the style current.
Black faux leather too harsh for you? New York-based Lilibon is a swimwear label that produces sweet, feminine styles. Again, the Lola bandeau/halter bikini references lingerie with its delicate lace fabric and demi-cup bralette top.
My fave of the collection? The ever-sweet Nouch one-piece with detachable halter strap (photo above). The ruffle detail at leg, the contrast stitching and lace fabric all remind me of a sexy-and-sweet bodysuit/romper.
Enjoy these samples of lingerie-inspired swimwear, and remember: next time your friends want to skinny dip, tell them you’d rather go in your undies!
